Specifying laptops for a business fleet

Quick guidance to help you choose the right specification with confidence.

Commercial line

Latitude, EliteBook or ThinkPad. Stable configuration for 12–18 months so imaging stays consistent.

Memory

16GB is the practical floor. 8GB machines generate helpdesk tickets costing more than the difference.

Management

Intel vPro or AMD PRO. Out-of-band management is the difference between a remote fix and a courier.

Storage

512GB NVMe minimum. 256GB fills within the deployment lifetime once Teams cache and OneDrive sync are running.

Warranty

3-year next-business-day onsite is standard for fleets. Accidental damage cover pays for itself in field roles.

Docking

Standardise on one dock across the fleet. Mixed docks are a recurring support cost.

We configure to order — asset tagging, BIOS settings, imaging and staged delivery.

About

Why commercial laptop lines exist

Commercial lines exist because of lifecycle, not performance. A Latitude or ThinkPad stays available in the same configuration for 12–18 months, so a machine bought in month one images identically to one bought in month twelve. Consumer models rotate silently and every batch becomes its own support problem.

16GB of RAM is now the practical floor for a knowledge worker running Teams, a browser with thirty tabs and an Office suite. 8GB machines are cheaper but generate helpdesk tickets that cost more than the difference within the first year.

If you manage devices remotely, specify Intel vPro or AMD PRO. Out-of-band management lets you patch, reimage and power-cycle a machine that won't boot — the difference between a remote fix and a courier collection.

Notebooks — common questions

How much RAM should a business laptop have?

16GB is the practical minimum for a knowledge worker running Teams, a browser and an Office suite. 8GB machines cost less up front but generate helpdesk tickets that exceed the saving within the first year.

What is Intel vPro and do I need it?

vPro provides out-of-band management, letting IT patch, reimage and power-cycle a machine even when the operating system won't boot. For remotely managed fleets it's the difference between a remote fix and a courier collection.

Can you configure laptops before delivery?

Yes. We handle asset tagging, BIOS configuration, imaging and staged delivery for fleet rollouts.
