Match the switch to the deployment
Small office & meeting rooms
Unmanaged switches work out of the box for a single flat network — an extra run of desks, a meeting room, a print corner.

Netgear
NETGEAR GS316P - Switch - unmanaged - 16 x 10/100/1000 (PoE+) - desktop, wall-mountable - PoE+ (115 W)
VLANs, VoIP & QoS
Managed switches give you VLANs, QoS, port mirroring and SNMP — needed as soon as you segment traffic or run voice.

PoE for APs & cameras
PoE switches power access points, IP cameras and phones over the data cable, removing a mains socket per device.

Choosing a network switch
Quick guidance to help you choose the right specification with confidence.
Unmanaged for a single flat network. Managed as soon as you need VLANs, QoS, port mirroring or SNMP visibility.
Check total watts, not per-port. A 24-port switch rated 370W total cannot deliver 30W to every port at once.
Size for today plus roughly 30%. Uplinks and APs consume ports faster than desks do.
SFP/SFP+ cages give fibre or copper flexibility later. Confirm the transceiver type your core expects.
Worth it above two switches per cabinet — one management plane instead of several.
Layer 3 routes between VLANs on the switch, removing a hop through the firewall on internal traffic.
We stock compatible optics for most vendors — send the part number and we'll confirm the match.

About
Managed and unmanaged switching for UK businesses
The first decision is managed versus unmanaged. Unmanaged switches work out of the box and suit a single flat network. Managed switches give you VLANs, QoS, port mirroring and SNMP monitoring, which you need as soon as you segment traffic, run VoIP, or want visibility into what is saturating a link.
Power over Ethernet is worth specifying up front even when you don't need it yet. PoE switches power access points, IP cameras and desk phones over the same cable that carries their data, removing a mains socket per device and simplifying every future install.
Apaxon supplies switching from Cisco, HPE Aruba, Netgear, TP-Link, Ubiquiti and Zyxel, along with the transceivers, patch cables and cabinets to go with it. For new sites we can spec the switching alongside the structured cabling.
Hubs & Switches — common questions
What is the difference between a managed and unmanaged switch?
An unmanaged switch forwards traffic with no configuration and suits a single flat network. A managed switch adds VLANs, quality of service, port mirroring and SNMP monitoring, which you need once you segment traffic or run voice over the network.
How much PoE power do I need?
Check the switch's total power budget rather than the per-port rating. A 24-port switch rated at 370W total cannot deliver 30W to every port simultaneously, so size against the devices you plan to power.
Do you supply SFP transceivers?
Yes. We stock compatible optics for most major vendors. Send the switch part number and the link type and we'll confirm the correct transceiver.
